Busy

Things have been busy around our house.  Chris is in Hawaii for work and Virginia has been out of sorts ever since he left. 
She's been clingy, not napping, not happy with whatever I plan for us, and just overall in a foul mood until yesterday.  This is to be expected but it doesn't make it very easy for me and it only makes me dread the upcoming deployment even more.  Once we get into our routines things return to "normal" but those transition days are tough.  On top of just getting used to him being gone we've had pre-deployment briefings it seems every other day, MOPS started with responsibilities for me, and FRG "stuff" that takes up the precious little alone time I have.  And because it costs $15 a day for internet in Hawaii at the hotel Chris hasn't been able to get online so my motivation for updating the blogs just wasn't there. 
Oh and Virginia and I are both sick.  I have headaches and a sore throat and she's been sneezing, coughing, and has a runny nose.  It wouldn't be such a big deal but I do not want us to be sick when Chris gets home from Hawaii as time will be very precious at that point.  Add on to all this the fact that June's 1st birthday is quickly approaching and I am really hanging onto the "one day at a time" mantra. 
So before he left we of course took a trip to the zoo!! 
This day they had just brought out this tortoise (not a turtle) and were letting the kids "pet" her.  Virginia did so good and was fascinated by the tortoise.  I tried to get some pictures of her and Chris but she just kept throwing her hand up in front of her face and screaming no.  What can I say, some days she just doesn't want her picture taken. 
Anyway, I can't promise anything but I'm gonna try to post a little more frequently.  :) 

Pretend Ice Cream Sensory Box

So here is more of my attempt at "teaching" Virginia things through play. 
I've been seeing alot on blogs about sensory tubs.  Really it's just putting different textured things in a box/tote and having some fine motor skill play go along with it. 
Who doesn't love to play with fuzzy, soft, little pom poms?  And why not pretend they are ice cream and put them in different ice cream "containers?" 
So for my Mommy friends I'll explain what all I put in the box and where I found the items and how much they were.
The box I had laying around.  You can use a small tote too.  Pom Poms-I used something like 4-6 bags of pom poms that I got at the dollar store.  One time investment that you can just keep for things like the ice cream box OR use in other craft projects.  Each of the ice cream "containers" I also got at the dollar store for yep you guessed it $1.  The big pink ice cream cone was $1 by itself but the champagne glass came in a packet of 2 and the little "shot glasses" came with like 10 in a pack.  I think they look like communion cups. 
Did I ever tell you how when I was little we would have communion at church and then I would come home and have communion with my dolls.  Oh how I would have loved to have these little cups to "pretend" with my dolls. 
You can't really see them but the tongs are in the bowl and they came in a set of 2 and then big long handled spoon also came in a pack with a spork all at the dollar store.  I went through Virginia's play kitchen and got the little play coffee cup and added it along with the small ice cream cone.  She has some play food and you could pop the ice cream scoop out and just have the cone. 

So how does she like it?  SHE LOVES IT.  We are going on 45 minutes of play by herself right now!!
She is NOT fan of the big long handled spoon or the tongs.  She couldn't figure them out at first and got frustrated and threw them down.  I let it all go and she's been playing happily ever since.  I would like for her to eventually use those 2 things because that does help with her fine  motor skills but remember it's all about being FUN!!! 

And guess what we are going to have for dessert tonight, ICE CREAM!!! 
So I spent about $10 on this box but they are all things that can be used over and over again in other sensory boxes.  Like I bought a big bag of plastic primary colored dinosaurs today at a yard sale for $2.  I plan on this winter putting some rice in the box and "hiding" the dinosaurs and hopefully she will use her tongs or scoop to "find" the dinosaurs and then possibly match the colors.  You could also use colored rice or noodles for this too and the ice cream "stuff." 

She was NOT wanting me to take her picture so that's why she looks rather frustrated and perturbed in the pictures.  It was right after naptime and sometimes she just needs some "alone time" to fully wake up and be sociable.

And yes those are Lightening McQueen pajamas she has on.  She LOVES them! 

Tot "School"

So I've become obsessed with reading other blogs of toddler moms and all the creative things they do with their kids.  Virginia is at an age where she enjoys doing different things and as a teacher I am really enjoying putting together "lessons" for her to do.  I've always felt that for the most part learning can be fun so the "lessons" I'm borrowing from other Moms have a fun factor while they still have a "learning" factor too.  Not everything I try is a hit and it could just be the day I introduce it or the way or the time.  If it's not I'll just file it away and pull it out later.  I'm trying to put together "lessons" too before hand.  Meaning have a stash of things put away for when Chris deploys again and Virginia and I are looking at each other wondering what to do today.  Some of the "lessons" Virginia can do by herself and others she may need my help. 
You may be wondering why I'm putting all these details here on the blog BUT I started a weekly posting on another site of our "lessons" and I forgot my password for the picture page to put them there so I'm just putting it all here and linking them here.  So here's Virginia's Tot School this past week!

Okay so I'm mainly showing this because I LOVE these paint containers and easel.  Nana and Papa got Virginia this easel and paint containers/brushes for Christmas last year and they really work great.  I like the easel because it's a small tabletop one so we either use it at the kitchen table or on her play room coffee table.  These paint containers do what they say and don't spill the paint.  They do get a bit messy because when you pull the brush out paint gets on the opening which then gets on the handle of the brush which then gets on Virginia's hands but these are washable paints and it all so far has come off Virginia's hands.  I'll post the link to where Nana found these but I think I may have seen them out in stores (she bought online).  And we don't do it often but Virginia loves to paint and it is always a treat for her.

BUT if you aren't into making a mess that day (or ever!) then the next activity is for you!

This activity was one of those that didn't HOLD Virginia's attention for as long as I would have liked!  I mean honestly while some of the activities are fun things for us to do together some of them should be by yourself activities and this one just didn't interest her much this particular day.  But there are a few things I might do differently that might hold her attention for longer.  So all you do is squirt water soluble paint into a baggie with equal parts baby oil.  Try and get all the air out.  Seal the baggie and then seal again with tape and then let the kids "finger paint." 
What was wrong?  I was a bit stingy on the paint.  Let's face it paint is expensive and I wasn't sure this would work so I went sparingly on the paint. 
I'll link at the bottom of this post the website that I found this idea.  The Mom who I borrowed this idea from also cut out a pretty decorative folder like a picture frame to go around the edges of the baggie and taped the baggie to the folder. 
And added bonus is that the baggie smells really good from the baby oil!!

Okay so I am starting to learn more and more about the Montesorri approach to learning.  My interpretation of it is a more hands on type learning environment.  That is a very broad statement on what Montesorri learning is but as many of you know even in my high school Social Studies classroom I tried to do lots of activities that were hands on.  I think it truly engages the learner in the concept being taught.  I also saw part of the Montesorri concept put into place in the Special Education pre-school classes I subbed in alot in Virginia.  They would have different activities on trays that at a "special time" the students could go and select which tray they wanted to "play" with.  The trays had all sorts of different activities (and were often changed out) that included lacing, beads, sorting, puzzles, sorting using different things like scoops and tongs that help with fine motor skills.  And there are some WONDERFUL websites out there that have some great ideas! 
So I was in a hurry the other day and threw together the above "activity."  Many of you know I LOVE TJ MAXX (thank you Aunt Sue for opening my eyes to tj maxx!) and you can find awesome things there for dirt cheap.  So I happened to have picked up this hop scotch game probably a year ago thinking I could use it at some point but had no idea how.  Then I stumbled upon a blog where I saw a Mom and all the different ways she was using it.  The circles come apart or if you are playing hop scotch you can attach them in different figures ( we did this outside but I didn't get any pictures).  So I put different "things" inside a box and gave Virginia a set of tongs from the kitchen and had her use the tongs to put the pieces inside the right colored circle.  I had way too many things in the box and the tongs were cooking tongs and hard to open so I would look for some salad type tongs at the dollar store and put fewer items in the box.  Because of my haphazard attempt at this (and the difficult tongs and me not really helping her) she didn't focus very long.  Again sometimes the time of day isn't right or how it's put together.  I'm also going to link you to an amazing website that is FULL TO THE BRIM of AWESOME AND AMAZING ideas that go along with books, the alphabet, montesorri ideas, ect.....I mean seriously I could spend days on this website!!  I'm working on putting together some activities with some of the children's books we have for the upcoming seasons!  Oh if only there was more time in the day!!!  I'm also going to put on here the sheet that I've borrowed from another Mom on how to keep track of things you are looking for while out doing other shopping.  Does that make sense?

Alot of the blogs I find things on are homeschooling Moms.  So while many of these are "learning" activities I also try to pick out ones that I think will be fun for Virginia.  Many of these you can set up outside if it's nice. 

Best Friends

My apologies for lack of blogging.  The holiday and some other things I will post about tomorrow have kept Chris, Virginia, and I busy. 

Virginia has really taken a liking to Bootsie.  Her favorite is to look at us and ask, "My dog?"  Over and over and over again as if at any moment Bootsie might become someone else's dog!  The other day Virginia had on her play shoes, ballet skirt, and beads and thought bootsie needed some beads too!  So we made Bootsie sit and we tried to snap a picture but they are typical children in that neither would look at me at the same time.

Then later on Bootsie snuggled up with Chris.

Barbie

A few weeks ago Nana and Papa sent Virginia her very first Barbie.  I was so excited.  As far as I knew Virginia had never seen or played with a Barbie unless it was at school. 
I was curious too because if she really loved Barbie then I could start looking for them at garage sales.
As you can see in the pictures her face lit up when she opened the package.  She played with her most of the rest of the day and some the next and then well...her cars began calling her name and she's back to playing with them.  Maybe one day she will fall in love with Barbie.
